I am Fan Yang or 杨凡 in Mandarin. My name means being ‘normal’, which is how my parents expected me to be when I was born.

I work as a postdoctoral research fellow at Melbourne Law School, the University of Melbourne node of ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making Society.

My research covers aspects of digital technologies including its cross-jurisdictional governance, political economy, labour, and ethics through innovative digital methods. You can find my publications via the link.

I completed my PhD at Deakin University, in Australia. My doctoral thesis – News Manufactories on WeChat: The Word Business, Censorship, and Pseudo-Journalism – explores the deployment of WeChat as a platform for content production and distribution among Chinese migrant communities in Australia, through the lens of human-technology mediation.

I play pipa (琵琶) – a musical instrument imported to ancient China, and I am a busking permit holder in the city of Melbourne. I am also interested in learning about the history and politics of food and enjoying rescuing plants 🌱

I work and live on the unceded land of the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung People of the Kulin Nation. As diaspora settler of colour from the legacies of colonisation, I am honoured to recognise my connections to the Country and strive to ensure that my research practice is conducted in a manner that respects and honours the Elders and Ancestors of these lands.
